Field Study Overview

The Field Study is the capstone experience of the Trauma-Skilled™ Specialist Certification program and is required for certification completion. While the online modules provide the knowledge, research, and strategies behind Trauma-Skilled™ practices, the Field Study gives participants the opportunity to apply that learning within their own educational setting.

Through reflection, planning, implementation, and evidence of practice, participants demonstrate how Trauma-Skilled™ principles can positively impact students, staff, classrooms, schools, and programs. The Field Study is designed to be flexible and relevant to your role, allowing you to connect the certification experience directly to your day-to-day work.

The Field Study consists of two parts:

Part 1:  Reflective Portfolio

Throughout the certification program, participants engage in reflection activities that encourage deeper thinking about Trauma-Skilled™ practices and their application within educational settings.

As part of the Field Study, participants revisit and expand upon these reflections through a Reflective Portfolio. This portfolio serves as an opportunity to document professional growth, examine shifts in perspective, and connect learning from the certification modules to real-world experiences.

The Reflective Portfolio helps participants identify strengths, opportunities for growth, and areas where Trauma-Skilled™ practices can be further integrated into their work.

Part 2: Action Plan

The Action Plan is where learning becomes implementation.

Participants identify one or more Trauma-Skilled™ principles and develop a plan for applying those practices within their educational setting. Action Plans may focus on classroom instruction, school culture, student supports, professional learning, family engagement, organizational practices, or other areas connected to the participant's role.

The goal is to intentionally apply Trauma-Skilled™ concepts in ways that create meaningful and sustainable impact.

As part of the Action Plan process, participants will document their work through a multimedia artifact that showcases the implementation and impact of their Trauma-Skilled™ practices. Participants may choose a format that best fits their role and goals, such as a lesson or unit plan, professional learning presentation, instructional video, digital resource, toolkit, data story, or another approved artifact.
